Making a difference to a generation that has given us all so much

The Good Society is a community of businesses and people determined to make a difference to the lives of our parents, our grandparents, our aunties and uncles, our teachers and our coaches. A generation that has given us all so much and now need our help.

Businesses like yours, from around South Africa, make it possible for us to give our elderly the LOVE, CARE and SUPPORT they need.

Your generosity is life changing ❤️

Mind the ‘GAP’

Your contributions help us fill the care ‘GAP’!

The sad truth is that the current government funding model meets a 64% shortfall in care costs for elders in our care, after an elder’s pension contribution and the Department of Social Development subsidy we receive for care. They fall far short of the true costs of providing services to vulnerable elderly citizens. This shortfall has created the care ‘GAP’ and with the COVID-19 pandemic the ‘GAP’ is growing.

Here’s what the situation looks like:

R22 Million

This shortfall amounts to a R22 million operational deficit that Tafta meets through fundraising and investment programmes.

+ R4 Million

In 2021, this deficit is set to grow to approximately R26 million due to a difficult fundraising environment and unbudgeted for Covid care costs.

For 488 elders who come to us with nothing more than a state pension, Tafta's inability to raise funds would mean the loss of a roof over their heads.

5 500

If we cannot reach out to vulnerable elders in the eThekwini region, almost 5 500 elders would be impacted, either through the loss of daily meals, community caregivers, and social service intervention in cases of neglect and abuse.

The Impact of COVID-19

Help us keep our elderly community safe.

COVID-19 has significantly impacted the way we live our lives and the impact has been most severely felt by our elderly community. In general, the risk of getting severely ill from COVID-19 increases as you get older. In fact, roughly 8 out of 10 COVID-19-related deaths in South Africa have been in adults 50 years and older.

So far we have not been able to escape the effects of the pandemic:

Elderly cases

Staff cases

PPE for Elders & Staff

We need to appropriately protect our staff and community by providing adequate PPE including full hazmat suits, safe hazardous waste disposal bins and bags, extra hospital beds, extra gloves, N95 masks, sanitising equipment and laundry services.

Very few of our residents have private medical aid – which means that we have to find the money for their tests. It is essential to keep testing because if we allow COVID-19 to spread through our homes unchecked we will be putting our elders lives in danger.

Self Quarantine Kits

To date we have had 69 cases in our elderly community and 25 cases amongst staff. As the pandemic continues into 2021 we have created self quarantine kits to help provide specialised care while preventing the spread of COVID-19 to the residents. These kits help our community quarantine in place without the need to be moved making it much less disruptive to their lives.

“We need to work together to protect older people from the virus, and to ensure their needs are being met – for food, fuel, prescription medication and human interaction.”

- Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, World Health Organization Director-General

Join The Good Society with a monthly donation and help us fund the ‘GAP’ and give our elders the love and support they need.

Sponsor a Covid Care Kit and bring a little comfort and relief to isolated elders and their dedicated carers.

Can fund food and  groceries for 1 person in our care home for 1 month.

Can fund care, transport, hygiene, food & groceries, and housekeeping for one of our elders for 1 month.

Can provide an elder in our care home with everything they need for an entire month.

A society that does not value its older people denies its roots and endangers its future. Let us strive to enhance their capacity to support themselves for as long as possible and, when they cannot do so anymore, to care for them.
